LessonsI have been skateboarding for 18 years, playing the drums for 11, and guitar for 10. I have been teaching boys/girls, men/women, beginners to advanced since 2001. It has been a very satisfying experience  watching students grow to love their new creative outlets!

SKATER TOTS!

Okay, if you live in Daytona Beach and you haven’t heard about Skater Tots yet, you are in for a treat.

Skater Tots was the brainchild of one of our favorite local rippers, Kyle Brubaker.

The Concept:

Clean out your room, car, or garage full of old skateboard parts that are collecting dust, and bring them to a participating Skater Tots business or Dirt City Event. We will clean, organize, and assemble complete skateboards for those a little less fortunate.

Skater Tots will then donate all complete boards to Toys for Tots, for distribution.

Plain. Simple. Skateboarding.

Dirt City provided the haircuts…thanks for the hawk, Amy!

We had a great time…a little sauced at times and tons of killer runs!

Special thanks to Hank, Tommy, and the muscle at Red Tail Bar and Grill for making this a smooth event.

And tons of love to Jeff and Brandon of Wank Clothing for the opportunity and generous contibutions!

The Skateboard Contest

Since its inception, and before my time, skateboarding has used contests to help push and progress the limits of what is possible on a piece of wood with wheels mounted to it.

From the very first event, there was this sense of confusion regarding what is “the best” or considered to be worth the most “points” standing on the nose or spinning in a circle the fastest. It all boils down to the opinion and mood of the judge in the event. Scores can be, and in fact, manipulated for the bro factor, or someone may have just cut the judge off in the line for nachos, thus receiving a higher/lower score for the day…

A 45 second contest run is a complex series of tricks linked together with some sort of style, or none at all, and put together in a neat little package. Don’t get me wrong, I think this is a fun format, however it makes it difficult to determine whether or not a b.s. smith in a pool corner is worth more “points” than a switch inward heel over a rail.

It like comparing apples to oranges…

In many aspects, the slalom and downhill guys have it wired. You start here, stop there, and measure then time it takes you to go between. Cut and dry. And most everybody can grasp the concept, unlike the 2-run format judged on 2,000 different criteria that is computed in the heads of the hung-over judges staring at the skate moms on the sidelines.

Time, Distance, height, speed….these are all units of measure that will determine a winner cut and dry. Now it would be up to the local park operators to create unique and fun events that will keep the kids wondering whats next?

Who can get the highest on the wall-ride…
Highest Ollie…
Longest Fronside Grind….
Best Trick anywhere in the park….
Slalom Races throughout the park…etc..etc..

The excitement level grows in a crowd when they have a higher level of anticipation, resulting from the knowledge of what is actually happening during the event.

If you have any new and unique ideas for a contest, please leave a comment.
